Singapore is set to have its own twin towers in 2017 when the DUO is built. The design for the building is a Malaysian-Singaporean joint venture and this will surely be a new icon in the country, which has always been ranked as one of the most livable cities in Asia. The design of the DUO structure is 2 buildings which was recently unveiled by Buro Ole Scheeren.
The twin towers will be built to be 186 meters and 170 meters high respectively. The higher tower will house more than 600 apartments while the lower one will be a commercial building with offices and a hotel where they will be built on the Kampong Glam area, one of the commercial districts of the city. As it is a Malaysian and Singaporean joint venture project, the DUO’s location of a mix of Malay and Muslim communities which was once upon a time a place of Malaysian aristocracy makes it all the more suitable.
The main factor about DUO is its hexagonal pattern of windows with concave walls. The proposal is to build a rooftop restaurant and a public observant deck, which have become quite a common feature in modern buildings today. Preliminary works like applications and approvals have begun and 2013 will be the year that the construction of the DUO will start and if everything goes according to plans, it will take 4 years for the next iconic building in Singapore to complete which will by then stand among the most popular landmarks in the world for sure.
